I am very interested in the sources you used in your history above, especially that pertaining to Peter Neeley's emigration from Ireland and the family's movements around the Great Lakes region. Would you be willing to share those sources? I am working on substantiating some of the genealogical research done in FamilySearch.com and Ancenstry.com. Many people have posted but there is little evidence to back it up. It sounds like maybe you have found some stuff that I haven't. I had to find another insurer where I could purchase coverage with a very high deductible and less covered. I haven't even considered their Medicare product for that reason. It would have to be a sight better before I'd purchase it. Fortunately, I was on Medicare when I had to spend my first night in the hospital since the day I was born. I'd have gone broke one way or another if I'd gotten sick in the interim. Not many good feelings here for any of the health insurance companies.jayzennerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11661516664030914925noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13200055.post-31921109276932419192015-05-28T12:32:03.177-04:002015-05-28T12:32:03.177-04:00On your comment about seeing and being able to act...On your comment about seeing and being able to act on patterns found within the mountains of data being generated. Just looking through historic data isn't enough to formulate a strategic advantage. Seeing the patterns is basically seeing and understanding what matters; timing is all important. “If you have just a little bit of the right information a couple of seconds or minutes in advance, it’s more valuable than all of the information in the world six months after the fact” (Vivek Ranadive). To maintain the competitive strategic advantage, the tactic must be to keep looking for the nuggets.gene@destinationanalytics.netnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13200055.post-13932764324158973212015-05-06T20:53:03.638-04:002015-05-06T20:53:03.638-04:00Tiered systems hurt poor families disproportionate...Tiered systems hurt poor families disproportionately. The sad part about the teaching profession is that teachers are increasingly being denied opportunities to find creative ways to reach their students — especially in places like my home town, Chicago … and even more especially in low-income areas. In the 1990s, the Chicago mayor tried to put in place strict, word-for-word scripts that teachers were to use in their classes! Teachers shot that down, but even today complain that they have lost the right to explore concepts. For example, if a student raises his hand during a test and says that he doesn't quite understand the question, teachers are barred from rewording it and can only tell the student to do the best he can.

It's unfortunate that creativity is becoming unpalatable. Culturally speaking, some teachers have the means to find new, more interactive ways to teach. Some studies have found that a particularly African-American style of teaching — a more advocacy-based rather than rote/dictatorial style — allows students to engage more and to ask questions. I was brought up such a system and allude to it when people remark on how "smart" I am. Rather than agreeing that I'm all that smart, I do admit that I'm adept identifying nuance, seeing between the lines, balancing opposing opinions, and questioning the status quo. Many teachers would find these traits troubling, but I honestly believe that they lead to encouraging young people to grow up to be less complacent, more active citizens. I will say, however, that I don't like it when ad displays and other local sports marketing efforts show UNC, Duke, NC State and leave out North Carolina Central University. I'm not conversant with all of the various leagues, tournaments, and whatnot, but I still feel that NCCU shouldn't continue to be ignored like that. I've seen college-sports marketing campaigns at local gas stations and have been disappointed to see Duke and UNC being touted even at the gas stations near the NCCU campus.

I experienced the same kind of disappointment growing up as a baseball fan (of both major-league teams) in Chicago. The coverage was very uneven. The White Sox could win a no-hitter and get a small mention in the daily paper. The Cubs could get trounced 12 to 0 but still get the huge, screaming headlines. I wished for equal treatment back then and I'd like to see it now.Durham Skywriterhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11242255812046693276noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13200055.post-24432594286757819742015-03-25T10:50:10.683-04:002015-03-25T10:50:10.683-04:00When I first moved to Durham, I noticed all of the...When I first moved to Durham, I noticed all of the empty planting beds downtown and wondered why the gardening clubs didn't partner with the building owners. It would have been nice to have a local gardening center donate flowers to gardening clubs, whose members would plant them downtown.
